The India-Israel relationship is a pragmatic one – the aura of romance is unwarranted

Whenever a high-level Indian-Israeli visitor is the subject of a vision means a ridiculous bark – that Delhi has the relationship with Tel Aviv “come out of the closet”. This refrain was also discussed in the context of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel on Tuesday.

Perhaps, it is useful to give a perennial touch of romance to an old relationship – as if India was biting a forbidden fruit. But we must not ignore the links between India and Israel are a transactional relationship.

India has crossed the Rubicon for a quarter of a century, when the prime minister of the time, Narasimha Rao decided to establish diplomatic relations with Israel. At that time, it seemed like a risky decision for many viewers, but Rao’s judgment was accurate, as was often the case.

In other words, the need to adapt to the later geopolitical realities of the Cold War was felt. Once the compass has been a large ship like India would rarely reverse the course and everyone has understood.

Therefore, a bipartisan consensus has developed in India that was useful and necessary to have relations with Israel, even though it is a small country with a population one-tenth the size of Turkey and Iran, the two large the region.

Why Israel Does It Matter? Mainly, India took advantage of the window of opportunity – as China made some time before the window was closed – to use Israel to divert US military technology that the Americans were not able to directly transfer. The relationship blossomed both because Israelis were ready and because the Americans simply looked away. Nowadays it has become a robust tree of fruit.

At the same time, security cooperation has grown as India tried to exploit Israel’s experience in fighting militancy, from the ABC of information gathering to robust interrogation and detention techniques, and recently the acquisition of Teams to effectively combat militancy and cross-border infiltration.

However, it is still a “store relationship.” Israel has freed the Indian defense authorities and security.

Israel had gained an enviable reputation due to its scam in the 1967 war with the Arab countries, while seizing the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the Syrian Golan and the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt – though Has become more important to the legend and is largely irrelevant in the current context, as shown by the futile war in Lebanon in 2006 (33-day concluding conflict between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah and Lebanon-based politics ).

Critical mass is also in the relationship. The crux of the matter is that interest groups have proliferated on both sides, which is inevitable when tens of billions of dollars change positions in transactions that are almost entirely hidden by the vis-à-vis public. Public corruption is high in both countries.

Palestine What does it matter that the Arab-Israeli conflict disturbs the Indian decision maker working in Israel? In fact, there is no evidence of at least the period since 2004.

Why 2004? It was the year in which Yasser Arafat died and the head of the Congress Sonia Gandhi did not attend the funeral of the Palestinian colossus who had intimate relations with the political, ideological and personal with the political elite of India.

Once again, India’s informed opinion had long ago taken Arab countries to have only arguments in favor of the Palestinian cause and that many Arab (Sunni) countries had ties to Israel at work – Egypt and Qatar being the Most prominent among them.
